This is some really embarrassing stuff and can get really uncomfortable even for those watching the videos. But there’s also a lot to learn from the mistakes of others. With a little bit of preparation and negative examples like these it is easy not to fall in the same traps and instead prepare a really professional best man toast.

The usual urge of nervous speakers is to put off preparation until the very last minute. Do not leave anything to chance. You have to know exactly how to start your speech and how to end it. 1. Break your speech into five parts. Here’s an example for a best man speech: Introduction, about the groom, anecdotes, bride and bridesmaids, closing lines.
2. Give a history lesson. Go over the significant milestones about the bride or groom. That would include the schools they attended, the jobs they had or the hobbies they are in to. Concentrate on stuff the audience might find interesting. You don’t have to present a complete biography here.
3. No jokes that have ethnic or racial connotations. This should be a must for every speech writer no matter the occasion. Also don’t make any reference to any lovemaking between the couple, for example on their honeymoon. And avoid any profane language.
4. Don’t mention previous relationships of the bride or groom.
5. Don’t drink too much alcohol before giving your speech.
6. Avoid any controversial family topics like a recent death.
7. Always stand when delivering the toast. Also avoid weak body language. Don’t look at your notes or shoes all the time. Making eye contact with your audience is vital. Also avoid grabbing the lectern or rocking from side to side. These are obvious signs of your nervousness.
8. If you are a friend or relative of the groom don’t neglect the bride. At least say something about the influence she’s had on her husband. If you’re a friend or relative of the bride do the same for the groom.
9. When you speak about both of them unitedly, try to think about what makes them special as a couple. Talk about how they will be able to enhance each other’s lives through their work or hobbies.
10. Everyone likes to hear and tell secrets. Say something no one knows about the person you will be talking about.
