So, you’ve come up with a great opening and now you want to end your persuasive speech with a big bang. The purpose of a conclusion it an emotional reaction to your message.

For this article we will analyze a real example of a closing from a commencement speech given by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs:

“Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. ”

Jobs used and anecdote to make his final message clear. In this case Jobs wanted the message to be the takeaway. The whole speech was about being young and cusious and the conclusion was not out of left field. However, you do not have to put your most important points in the conclusion again. Better think about something original.

Don’t make these beginner’s mistakes:

1. Don’t leave the stage too fast after ending your speech.
2. Do not say “thank you” as this shows weakness.
3. Do not stop suddenly – for example. – “I have nothing more to say.”
4. Don’t bring in new ideas or stuff that you have forgottn in your conclusion.
