Is there a universal pattern you can use everytime you don’t know how to write a speech? Of course there is! The minimal requirement for every speech is the same as for every story or essay: Introduction, main part, end. Reminds you of school? Yes, it’s that easy. Way too many speakers go like a bull at a gate or end their speech so abruptly that the audience needs some moments to grasp that it is over.  On the other hand introductions can be so boring that most people stop paying attention instead of getting interested. In this article I will explain strategies that will work everytime you don’t know how to write a speech.

Try to start with something that will capture your audience instantly. But not too fast. We are assuming that people are not with us as we start talking. Don’t start with your brilliant thought right away. Your audience needs at least five seconds to tune into your voice, way of speaking etc. Also important: The more you expect resistance against your arguments during your main part the more important it is to animate their thoughts by asking questions in the beginning.

When writing your main part with your arguments rty arranging them in a way that you start with a strong one and end with THE strongest one. Especially the last argument will resonate with your audience.

But equally will they remember how you ended your speech. They won’t know if you started nervous and insecure if you don’t end that way. If you are giving a persuasive speech and want you audience to think differently about something or even act in a certain way you have to tell them directly. The goal of your speech should be absolutely clear to them.

These are just some tips to push you in the right direction. Just follow the main priciple of introduction, main part and end if you absolutely don’t know how to write a speech. If you are more advanced you can do variations on this pattern.
